Arrington, DeBell Double-Doubles Lead R-MC Women’s Hoops Past RC

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Becca Arrington (Amelia, Va./Amelia Academy) recorded her first collegiate double-double with 14 points and a career-best 11 rebounds, and junior Aimee DeBell (Studley, Va./Saint Gertrude) registered her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 boards, as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team downed Randolph 59-44 in ODAC action on Tuesday evening in Crenshaw Gymnasium.

How it Happened:

  • DeBell had the first two buckets of the game before the Wildcats scored on a layup with 7:45 remaining in the first period, their only points of the quarter. DeBell had two more baskets, and Arrington hit two free throws and a three-pointer as R-MC led 13-2 after one quarter. The Yellow Jackets defense held Randolph to 1 for 12 shooting from the floor with nine turnovers.
  • Two DeBell layups were sandwiched around a pair of free throws by junior Peyton Humphreys (Lexington, Ky./Paul Laurence Dunbar) as the lead grew to 17 at 19-2 with 8:30 left in the second period. The Wildcats used a 15-7 to pull within nine at 26-17 with 3:45 remaining. A triple by sophomore Devan Conrad (Parkville, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and two free throws by DeBell pushed the lead back to 14 a before a late trey by Randolph made it 31-20 at the break. DeBell had 14 points and five rebounds.
  • The Wildcats had the first bucket of the third quarter to cut the deficit to nine, the final time the margin would be in single digits. Two free throws by DeBell and a three-point play by Arrington pushed the lead to 14 at 36-22 with 7:20 left. A triple by Arrington was the final basket of the quarter as R-MC was up 45-30 after three periods.
  • A layup by Conrad extended the lead to 17 at 47-30 early in the final quarter. A jumper by freshman Olivia Murray (Moseley, Va./Manchester) gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of 18 at 59-41 with 36 seconds left. A three-pointer by Randolph made the final 59-44.

By The Numbers:

  • Conrad had eight points and eight rebounds.
  • In her first collegiate start, junior Janelle De Guzman (Raleigh, N.C./St. Thomas More Academy) had eight points, three rebounds and three assists.
  • R-MC had a 52-35 advantage on the boards as well as 21-10 on second-chance points. Humphreys had eight rebounds.
  • The Yellow Jackets had six players with multiple assists: Humphreys, DeBell, Arrington and DeGuzman each had three, while Conrad and freshman Haley Felton (Bon Air, Va./St. Catherine's) both had two.
  • R-MC went 11 for 13 from the free throw line (84.6%).
