Stormy Petrels beat Rhodes in final seconds, remain undefeated

The Oglethorpe women's basketball team had to fight until the end Sunday afternoon against the Rhodes Lynx, but they prevailed 71-70 to improve to 4-0 on the season and extend their winning streaks to 31 games overall and 21 against SAA opposition. The last time the Stormy Petrels lost a game of any type was Nov. 15, 2019, at Emory and Henry, and the last time they lost a game to an SAA team was Feb. 24, 2019, in the SAA championship game against Rhodes.

The Petrels were down to their final possession and trailed Rhodes 70-69 on Sunday, but sophomore guard Sarah Plemons drove to the basket past a defender and laid the ball up and through the hoop with just three seconds remaining. The Lynx got an open look at the other end after a timeout but it caromed just long off the rim and time ran out, giving the Petrels a weekend sweep over their opponent.

The Petrels seemed to have pretty firm control over the game midway through the third quarter, leading by as much as 44-33 with five minutes left in the period. However, the visitors went on a serious run, outscoring Oglethorpe 15-2 over the remainder of the quarter and taking a 48-46 lead into the fourth. Rhodes outscored Oglethorpe 21-12 in the third period.

The Lynx followed that up with an 11-4 run over 3:05 to build a 61-55 advantage with 5:30 remaining in the game. They maintained a 67-61 lead with 4:05 on the clock, but the Petrels outscored the visitors 10-3 for the rest of the contest.

The two teams traded the lead back and forth in the first quarter, after which Rhodes held a 13-12 edge. Oglethorpe pushed into a tentative lead in the second quarter, though, scoring 8 straight to take a 32-24 lead at the 1:50 mark.

Senior center Savannah LeGate led the Petrels with 22 points and 16 rebounds, connecting on 8 of 16 shots from the floor. Junior guard Nikki Reed added 13 points and six rebounds.

The Petrels will be back in action Friday when they travel to Conway, Arkansas, to take on Hendrix at 7 p.m. Eastern. They'll complete the two-game series with the Warriors Saturday at 2 p.m.
