Hope Turns Away Calvin For Ninth Consecutive Win in The Rivalry

A lead whittled down to four late in The Rivalry, the Hope College women's basketball team picked up a timely boost from a sharp-shooting center.

Senior Olivia Voskuil buried her second 3-pointer of the game on its first possession of the fourth quarter to spark a decisive run that propelled the Flying Dutch to a 74-58 victory against Calvin University at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Hope (4-0 overall) outscored the Knights 13-4 during the opening 2 ½ minutes of the final quarter beginning with Voskuil's 3 with 9:33 remaining.

Voskuil (Holland, Michigan/Holland Christian HS) and her fellow seniors remained undefeated in The Rivalry with their ninth victory in as many tries.

"It's special this year, given the circumstances with COVID, that we got a chance to play in The Rivalry game," Voskuil said. "It was fun."

Added senior Sydney Muller (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Grand Rapids Christian), "Everyone has the same passion when it comes to Calvin. We all want to beat them. It's fun to celebrate beating them."

Saturday was the 126th all-time meeting between the two teams and a unique one with no fans because of the global pandemic.

Hope cut Calvin's lead in the series to 71-55. The ninth win in a row against Calvin continued the Flying Dutch's longest winning streak since The Rivalry's first game in the 1965-66 season.

A scoring barrage from three of Hope's senior starters paved the way.

Kenedy Schoonveld (Zeeland, Michigan/Holland Christian) scored a game-high 19 points and became the 17th Flying Dutch player to score 1,000 points in her career. She has 1,012 points in 93 games. She also hit a 3 during Hope's decisive surge to start the fourth quarter.

Voskuil chipped in a season-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-pointer range. The 6-3 forward also matched her season-high with five steals, grabbed three rebounds and blocked one shot.

Muller joined Schoonveld and Voskuil in double figures with 11 points. Muller also recorded a team-high four assists.

Calvin guard Leah Harris topped the Knights (0-3) with 18 points. Forward Stephanie Coors had 10 points.

This game did not count toward the MIAA standings because a single round of games will determine the league champion this season. Hope travels to Calvin for the rematch on Saturday, February 20 at 3 p.m.

"I thought Calvin had their best game of the year. Credit to them, they hit big 3 after big 3 to keep the game close," head coach Brian Morehouse said. "In the end, between I thought the pressure of our defense and legs getting tired, I don't think they shot it as well in the second half specifically in the third quarter. I thought we did a little better job defensively on the 3-point shot. We also rebounded some long rebounds and got some pushes off those 3-point shots."

Hope's next game is Wednesday, February 3 against Trine University (5-0) at DeVos Fieldhouse. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
