Rhodes Women's Basketball Opens Season With Record-Breaking Performance

Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball had scored 92 points against Birmingham-Southern College Saturday evening, and still had seven minutes of action left to play. The Lynx went on to defeat BSC 118-85, breaking the program and Southern Athletic Association records for most points scored in a single game. The previous record came during the 2003-04 season when Matt Dean coached the Lynx to a 116-113 triple overtime victory over Oglethorpe. The Lynx broke the SAA record of 115 points scored by Millsaps (vs. North Central) during the 2014-15 season.

The Lynx also limited the Panthers to their lowest score against a DIII-opponent this season.

After leading by only one point at the end of the first period, the Lynx outscored BSC 24-18 to go up by as many as 11 points, taking a 49-42 lead. Nearing the end of the third period, the Lynx scored eight straight points to hold an 18-point advantage. Rhodes outscored BSC 32-21 in the third frame and limited the Panthers to 3-of-18 from the arc. The Lynx continued their offensive push in the final period, scoring 37 points. They connected on 13-of-19 field goals while BSC went 4-of-26. 

Rhodes made 39-of-85 field goals, 32-of-48 free throws, led the game with 80 rebounds, and tallied 26 assists and 10 steals. The Lynx did commit 29 turnovers against BSC's full-court press. Rhodes limited BSC to a .212 shooting percentage, their lowest of the season.  The Lynx shot 46% in the field overall, 33.3% from the arc, and 66.7% from the free throw line. They also outscored BSC 69-43 in the second half.

Six Lynx scored in double digits while two tallied double-doubles. Alexys Mathangani and Kiera Downey each recorded 19 points. Maya Longacre added 17 and Alli Mayeux 10 while Longacre grabbed 11 rebounds and Mayeux led the game with 12.  Freshman Catherine Althoff rounded out double digit scoring in her collegiate debut with 15 points, netting all five field goal attempts. Fellow freshman Jordan Frederickson also sank all of her field goal attempts (three), two of which came from beyond the arc. Her first collegiate made basket lifted the Lynx over 100 points on a three-pointer with 4:18 left in the game. Senior Caroline Taylor recorded 10 free throws on 11 attempts, grabbed six rebounds and also recorded the game-high six assists. Althoff narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds while Mathangani added another eight and sophomore Taya Lee totaled seven.

Last year the Lynx were close to scoring triple digits, but fell just short, notching 98 points and 97 points. Saturday night marks the sixth time the Lynx have scored 100 or more points, five of which occurred at home.

The two teams will square up again Sunday at 1 p.m. inside Mallory Gymnasium in Memphis.
