GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City erased a 14-point second quarter deficit to defeat the Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team by a 60-50 score in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at the College Arena in Mercer County.
The score was tied at 37 all entering the fourth quarter but the host Wolverines outscored the Presidents by a 23-13 margin to earn the victory.
Maria Lawhorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) recorded her fifth career double-double, as the junior tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds in the setback. Saddled with foul trouble for a good chunk of the game, Alie Seto (Allison, Pa./Brownsville) finished with 13 points. Hannah Johnstonadded 10 points and eight rebounds for the Presidents.
Both teams exchanged scores early before a layup by Piper Morningstar (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) gave the Presidents a 6-5 lead at the 4:43 mark. Seto followed with a three-pointer to extend the lead to four.
After a Grove City basket, the Presidents scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 15-7 edge after 10 minutes. Consecutive layups by Johnston, Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) and Seto finished the quarter.
W&J tacked on a 10-4 run to start the second quarter to extend the lead to 25-11 at the 5:44 mark. Four different players scored baskets during the run for W&J. Grove City countered with the final nine points of the frame to cut the deficit to 25-20 at the break.
Grove City scored five straight points to start the third, which tied the score at 25-25. Seto stopped the 13-0 run with a layup and free throw to give the Presidents a 28-25 lead at the 7:46 mark.
After four straight points gave the Wolverines the lead, Seto drained three-of-four at the free throw line to give the Presidents a 31-29 edge at the 5:00 mark. The teams exchanged scores over the next five minutes and the score was tied at 37-37 going to the fourth.
Following an exchange of layups at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Jess Bowen completed a three-point play with 6:49 to play, giving the Wolverines a 42-39 edge.
The Wolverines maintained the lead the rest of the way. Johnston converted a jumper in the lane to bring the Presidents within two (46-44) with 3:17 to play. A pair of free throws by Lawhorne made the score 53-50 at the 1:09 mark. Grove City scored the final seven points, which included five from the free throw line, to put the game away.
Two areas that favored the Wolverines were free throws and turnovers. Grove City converted 19-of-23 at the charity stripe while W&J made just 11-of-18 attempts. The Wolverines were plus 11 in turnover margin (24-13).
The Presidents conclude the regular season at 16-9 overall and 11-5 in PAC play. Grove City moves to 23-2 overall and 14-2 in league games.
W&J holds the No. 4 seed in the upcoming PAC Tournament. The Presidents have a bye into Wednesday's PAC Quarterfinals at a time to be announced. W&J will face the winner of Monday's First Round contest between No. 5 Chatham and No. 8 Geneva.
Grove City enters next week's PAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Wolverines have clinched the double bye and automatically advance to the PAC Semifinals Friday evening in Latrobe, Pa.
