Presidents Get Defensive in Senior Day Win over Bethany

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team honored senior Megan Williams (Bay Village, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) pregame and stifled Bethany in a 59-37 senior day victory at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium.

With the victory, W&J collects its sixth-straight league win and rises to 16-8 overall and 11-4 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Bethany fell to 6-18, 5-10 PAC.

Bethany's 37 points were the lowest by a W&J opponent all season as the Presidents held the Bison to 12-of-44 shooting (27.3 percent) and 21 turnovers.

W&J outscored Bethany in all four quarters and held the Bison to single digits in three quarters.

The Presidents led by seven at halftime, and through the first seven minutes of the third quarter Bethany hung around with W&J leading 33-27. Two free throws by Alie Seto (Alison, Pa./Brownsville) and a jumper from Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) provided some breathing room as W&J went up a dozen late in the quarter.

Leading by 10 the end of the third, W&J used threes from Victoria Koeck (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) and Catherine Martin (Blairsville, Pa./Blairsville) to extend the President advantage to 48-31 with 6:53 left to play in regulation.

The Presidents put the game away by scoring nine-straight points over a four-minute stretch towards the end of the quarter. Williams capped in the game's final minute to punctuate the senior day win.

The start of the game saw the two-team exchange runs for the better part of the first quarter. Bethany scored the game's first four points in the contests' first 91 seconds.

W&J responded with an 11-0 run over nearly seven minutes of game time. Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) had a pair of free throws and a jumper in the run before exiting the contest with injury. During the run, W&J held Bethany to zero-of-six shooting with five turnovers.

A Bethany basket with just over a minute to paly in the first quarter made the score 11-6 W&J heading into the second. The Bison continued with five more points with layup and a three to tie the game at 11 early in the second quarter.

Seto responded with a pair of layups, a three and Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa./Central) chipped in a three as W&J raced ahead 21-14 with 5:42 to play in the half.

After Bethany trimmed the advantage to four, Maria Lawhorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) added a pair of buckets, and W&J cashed in on a four-point possession with Morningstar collecting an offensive rebound on a missed free throw.

Bethany's Courtney Walker sunk a deep three at the buzzer and W&J led 27-20 at the halftime break.

Seto led the way with 17 points, 10 rebounds, six steals and two blocks. McDaniel poured in 13 points, 11 coming in the second half.

Lawhorne registered six points, 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks.

W&J has secured a top-four seed in the PAC Tournament and concludes its regular season Saturday at Grove City.
