Schmelter’s Double-Double Lifts WashU on Senior Day

St. Louis, Mo., Feb. 16, 2020 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day with a 66-52 victory over Carnegie Mellon University Sunday at the WU Field House in St. Louis.

Prior to the contest, WashU honored its lone senior in Kristina Schmelter. In three seasons on the Danforth Campus, Schmelter has helped lead WashU to a 54-24 (.692) overall record with two trips to the NCAA Tournament and the 2019 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.

Schmelter recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 24 points and a career-best 15 rebounds, while freshman Sammi Matoush had 15 points. WashU shot 38.9 percent (21-54) from the field and hit 19-of-25 from the free-throw line.

WashU improved to 13-9 and 6-5 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Carnegie Mellon dropped to 10-12 and 3-8 in the league. The Bears are two games back in the UAA standings with three games left.

WashU started slow and hit just 2-of-13 from the field and trailed 10-6 after the first quarter.

Trailing by eight (22-14) in the second, freshman Molly Gannon ignited a 13-1 run with the Bears' first three-pointer of the contest. Gannon canned another three and then a bucket by Schmelter made it 27-23.

Schmelter had 10 points and seven board as WashU took a 28-26 lead to half. The Bears shot just 31.3 percent (10-32) from the field but forced 10 turnovers. 

A three-pointer by Matoush and a triple by freshman Naomi Jackson at the buzzer game WashU a 46-41 lead after three. The Bears shot 45.5 percent (5-11) in the third quarter and hit 6-of-6 from the foul line.

Jackson's three at the end of the third ignited a 10-0 run as WashU built a 53-41 lead with 7:59 to play. The lead grew to 18 (61-43) after a pair of free-throws by Schmelter.

Laurel Pereira led CMU with 15 points and six rebounds while Caitlyn Clendenin had 10 points, six boards and four assists. The Tartans shot 36.4 percent (20-55) from the field and hit just 10-of-22 from the free-throw line.

WashU opens a three-game road trip at Brandeis on Friday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. (ET).
