St. Louis, Mo., Feb 14, 2020 – Freshman Molly Gannon had a career night with 27 points and eight assists as the Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team posted an 88-71 victory over Case Western Reserve University Friday at the WU Field House in St. Louis.

Gannon was 10-of-18 from the field, including 7-of-14 from three-point range in the win. WashU hit 11-of-33 three-pointers in the victory. The Bears outscored Case 20-4 in points off turnovers.

WashU improved to 12-9 and 5-5 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Case dropped to 10-11 and 5-5 in the league. The Bears moved into a tie for fourth place in the league standings, two back of first place New York and Chicago.

WashU hosts Carnegie Mellon on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. Prior to the game WashU will honors its lone senior in Kristina Schmelter. 

Schmelter added 17 points on 8-of-15 field goal shooting, while sophomore Samantha Weaver (14 points, six rebounds, five assists), freshman Sammi Matoush (10 points, 10 rebounds) and sophomore Hayley Semple (10 points, five rebounds) also scored in double figures.

Weaver had six points as WashU and Case were tied 16-16 after the first quarter.

Gannon took over in the second quarter going 6-of-6 from the field with 15 points and three assists. She ignited a 7-0 run with a three to make it 35-28. The Bears hit 14-of-22 (63.6 percent) from the field in the second quarter.

WashU took the 48-40 lead to half as Gannon led the way with 15 points and six assists, while Schmelter and Weaver each added eight points. The Bears shot 46.5 percent (20-43) from the field and had an 11-2 advantage in fast-break points.

The Bears outscored Case Western Reserve 25-20 in the third quarter to jump out to a double-digit lead (73-60). Schmelter his 4-of-5 from the field and had nine points in the quarter.

Gannon opened the fourth with a three to extend the lead to 76-60.

Abbey Lawrence (20), Melissa Heath (13) and Isabella Mills (13) scored in double figures for Case, which shot 40.3 percent (27-67) from the field and hit 6-of-22 from three-point range.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Case 52-2 … The Bears are 8-4 at home this season … Semple's 10 points were a season high … The double-double for Matoush was the third of her career.
