Marymount Shuts Down High-Scoring Griffin Offense, Rolls To Ninth League Victory

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Marymount University women's basketball team held the leading scoring offense in the country to under 50 points on Wednesday night, as the Saints rolled to a 85-50 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University in an Atlantic East Conference matchup.

Entering Wednesday's game, the Griffins led the country with 89.8 points per game. The Saints, who are eighth in the country in scoring defense with just 49.5 points allowed per game, shut down the high-scoring Gwynedd offense, allowing 50 points on a 25.3 shooting percentage.

Through that process, the Saints forced the Griffins into 24 turnovers with 15 of them being MU steals. With seven Saints securing steals, freshman Symantha Shackelford led the defensive charge with a game-high four for the evening.

On the offensive side of the ball, all but one of the 11 Saints that saw time in the game scored. Shooting an impressive 44.4 percent from the floor including a 5-for-7 tally from beyond the arc, Marymount was paced by a 21-point performance by reigning USBWA National Player of the Week, sophomore Katie McShea. The forward registered her 14th double-double of the season, the ninth most in all of Division III, with a game-high 21 points and game-high 11 rebounds. She also added a game-high five assists, a block and a steal.

McShea was joined by seniors Gabriella Haddad and Abby Fisher with double-figure scoring nights, as Haddad knocked in 19 points and Fisher added 10.

The Saints never trailed in the matchup, building up to its largest lead of 42 points in the third quarter. The third quarter alone sported 33 points for the Saints, shooting at a 66.7-percent clip and a perfect 5-for-5 from deep. The five three-pointers came from Fisher, junior Aidan Phillips and freshman Lauren Cunningham

With just two games left in the regular season, the Saints sit 19-4 overall and sit atop the Atlantic Region in the first regionally ranking released on Wednesday.

They'll hit the road for the last time before postseason play on Saturday, February 15, traveling to Immaculata University for a 1 p.m., tip.
