Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 9, 2020 – Senior Kristina Schmelter and sophomore Samantha Weaver each scored 16 points to lift the Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team to a 72-61 win at first-place Emory Sunday in Atlanta. 

Schmelter had 16 points and 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double, while Weaver had 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Freshmen Molly Gannon (14) and Sammi Matoush (14) also scored in double figures for WashU.

The Bears limited Emory to 33.8 percent (23-68) shooting from the field, and just 4-of-25 from three-point range.

WashU improved to 11-9 and 4-5 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Emory dropped to 15-5 and 6-3 in the UAA. WashU is two games out of first place in the conference standings with five games remaining.

WashU led 16-13 after one quarter as the Bears scored 10 of 16 in the paint and hit 8-of-14 from two-point range. Schmelter had six points to lead WashU.

The Eagles opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run to take the 22-18 lead with 7:55 to play before half. Matoush scored a pair of buckets to highlight a 6-0 run as the Bears got the lead back to 24-22.

WashU took a 30-28 into half after the Bears shot 60 percent (15-25) from two-point, but missed all 12 of its three-point attempts. Schmelter led WashU with 10 first-half points.

Emory was issued a technical foul to start the third, and that ignited a 12-2 run for as the Bears jumped in front 42-30. Gannon banked in a three to highlight the run, ending a streak of 14-consecutive missed threes by WashU.

Gannon's second three of the quarter made it 49-35 with 2:22 left. WashU outscored Emory 19-11 in the third quarter as Gannon and Weaver each had six points.

The Eagles went on a 7-0 run to trim the advantage to 49-41, but Matoush canned four-straight free-throws to get the lead back to double figures at 55-43.

Erin Lindahl (13), Blair Ripley (13) and Molly Weiss (11) all scored in double figures for Emory, who suffered its first loss of the season at home (9-1). Lindahl recorded the 1,000th point of her career in the defeat.

WashU hosts Case Western Reserve on Friday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Emory 56-7, and the Bears swept the season series … Schmelter has recorded double-doubles in six of the last seven games and is averaging 13.3 ppg and 8.8. rpg for the season.
