The Oglethorpe women's basketball team secured their second outright SAA regular season title in the last 3 years Friday night, knocking off the visiting Sewanee Tigers 81-51 at Dorough Field House to improve to 22-1 overall and a perfect 12-0 in SAA play, extending the best record in program history by both metrics.
The Stormy Petrels, ranked 16th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 and tied for 11th in the coaches poll, wasted no time asserting themselves against the visiting Tigers, leading the whole way. They jumped out to a 17-5 lead over the opening 6 minutes of the game, then went on a 27-9 run over the remainder of the half to take a 45-19 lead into the break. They outscored Sewanee 20-7 in the second quarter by itself.
The Tigers played the Petrels much more evenly in the third quarter, but the size of Oglethorpe's lead made it difficult for Sewanee to work their way back into the game. They worked their way as close as 24 points in the third quarter, but the Petrels used 5 straight points early in the period to build their largest lead, 68-35, with just over 8 minutes to play. The home side cruised to the win from there.
Junior center Sydni Donovan enjoyed an outstanding game for the Petrels, accruing a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Taylor Smith added 12 points on 6-of-12 from the floor and eight rebounds, while junior center Savannah LeGate added 9 points and three blocks.
The Petrels shot 45.2 percent from the floor and 40 percent from 3-point range while holding Sewanee to just 30.8 percent overall. Oglethorpe outrebounded the Tigers 52-34 and outscored them 21-10 in second chance points and 39-12 off the bench.
Oglethorpe now gets set for their final home game of the regular season. They'll host Centre at 1 p.m. Sunday from Dorough Field House before closing out the regular season at Berry on Feb. 15.
