Cortland Women Use Mid-Game Streak to Defeat Oswego, 67-47

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland outscored Oswego 17-0 over four minutes spanning the second and third quarters to break open a tight game and the Red Dragons defeated the visiting Lakers, 67-47, in SUNYAC women's basketball action.
 
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Cortland, which improved to 17-2 overall and 11-1 in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons trail league leader New Paltz (12-1 conference) by a half game. Beth Bonin (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) finished with nine points, six assists and a Cortland career-high 12 rebounds. Sarah Tully (East Aurora) added nine points, Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) finished with seven points and five assists, and Tatiana Stevens (Shirley/Longwood) pulled down a career-best six rebounds.
 
Sydni Eure led Oswego (6-13, 2-11 SUNYAC) with 17 points, 15 rebounds and three assists. She entered the game as the SUNYAC's rebounding leader at 11.6 per game. Taylor Torchia totaled 15 points and dished out three assists and Morgan Wolanin hauled in 13 rebounds.
 
Oswego led 12-5 with three minutes left in the first quarter, but Cortland scored the next seven points, capped by two baskets from Joka Oyefeso (Staten Island/Port Richmond), to tie the game at 12. The teams were tied at 14 after one quarter, and the Lakers were still within a point at 23-22 on a Quincey Zimmerman layup with 2:46 left in the second quarter.
 
Cortland scored the final 11 points of the half to take a 34-22 lead. Longford hit a jumper to start the run, followed by 3-pointers from Tully, McGuire and Maggie Malone (Cornwall) over the final 1:46. The Red Dragons scored the first six points of the third quarter on two Tully buckets, sandwiched around a McGuire layup, to go up 40-22 with 8:38 remaining. Cortland led 56-36 after three quarters and by at least 16 points the entire fourth quarter.
 
For the game, Cortland shot 41 percent from the floor compared to 28 percent for Oswego. The Red Dragons held a 23-2 advantage in points scored by bench players.
 
Cortland travels to Oneonta on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. league matchup.
