Mirecki Notches 10 Points as WPI Drops 56-39 Road Contest to Smith

Northampton, MA --- A 10-0 run to start things off propelled Smith to a 56-39 victory over WPI on Saturday afternoon. Smith was led by a 15-point, seven-rebound performance by Amelia Clairmont (Laconia, NH), who connected on five 3-pointers on the day for the Pioneers.  

With the victory, Smith is now 18-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play while WPI slips to 12-9 on the season and 2-4 in NEWMAC action. 

Victoria Mirecki (Rock Tavern, NY) led the Engineers with 10 points, six rebounds and a pair of assists off the bench while Alana Keating (Leominster, MA) and Spencer Vinson (Los Angeles, CA) each chipped in eight points on the day.  Vinson corralled a team-high nine rebounds and Alex Scariati (Scotch Plains, NJ) doled out a team-best four assists. 

Katelyn Pickunka (Westhampton, MA) and Elle Jo Whalen (Woodinville, WA) both joined Clairmont in double figures in scoring for Smith while Dashelle Gleissner (Los Angeles, CA)) paced all players with 12 assists on the day.  Pickunka hauled in 12 rebounds to tally a double-double and she added game-highs of three steals and two blocks. 

WPI shot just 26.4 percent from the floor, including a 15 percent effort from deep while Smith connected on 51.1 percent of the shots it took on the afternoon (23-45).  

The Engineers were outrebounded by the Pioneers, 33-28, and WPI got 19 of its 39 points on the afternoon from its bench play.  

Smith got out to a fast 10-0 lead over the first five minutes of the first quarter thanks to back-to-back threes from Clairmont and never looked back. The Pioneers ended the frame with am 18-6 lead though the Engineers were able to cut that lead to nine heading into halftime, heading into the break down 30-21.  

However, coming out of the intermission Smith raced out on yet another 8-0 run, behind another Clairmont trey gaining a 17-point lead that the Crimson and Gray were unable to overcome, ultimately falling 56-39 on Saturday afternoon.  

WPI heads to Springfield for a 7pm tilt on Wednesday, February 12 while Smith will continue play at Coast Guard at 7:30 the same night.
