Benedictine Women Rally to Win in Overtime

LISLE, IL - Alex Fanning logged a career night and sent the game to overtime with a three-pointer in the closing moments of overtime as the Benedictine University women's basketball team willed past Wisconsin Lutheran in overtime, rallying from down nine in the fourth quarter.

The contest was a nail-biter from the get-go between two programs that have been battling at the top of the conference the past several years who play solid defense
Benedictine scored the first four points of the game on a pair of free throws from Allison Michalski and a layup from Fanning
Wisconsin Lutheran scored the final five points of the first and led 11-9 after one
Benedictine tallied the first four points of the second to grab a 13-11 lead on a Britney Pitzer layup
Wisconsin Lutheran scored the next seven points and closed the half on an 11-2 run to lead 22-15 at the break
The visitors opened an eight-point lead in the third but Benedictine used a 10-0 run to jump ahead 29-27 on a layup from Fanning with 4:05 left in the quarter
Benedictine did not score again in the frame as Wisconsin Lutheran led 30-29 headed to the final 10 minutes
A 7-0 run allowed Wisconsin Lutheran to open a 40-31 lead with 5:51 left in regulation
Fanning scored six in a row including a big three as Benedictine pulled within 40-37 at the 4:22 marker
Wisconsin Lutheran held on to the lead, holding a 47-42 edge with just 27 seconds left
Claire Gibler hit a huge three to chop the deficit to two points and following two free throws Reggie Much converted on a second chance basket with 11 seconds left
A split of free throws set the stage for Fanning to receive the inbounds pass, step left and deposit her third three of the game to tie the score with 5.5 remaining
Pitzer opened overtime with two free throws and Benedictine trailed just once in overtime at 56-55 before another layup from Fanning and two free throws from Much after an offensive rebound produced the decision
The win marked the 11th in a row for Benedictine overall and the 23rd in a row at home and also produced the program's first ever season sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran

STAT LEADERS
Fanning took over the game, finishing with 25 points, two off her career best, and a career best 20 rebounds to go with five blocks
Michalski added nine and Pitzer finished with eight in a game that saw 10 ties and eight lead changes
Benedictine shot just 33 percent for the game but hit at a 47 percent clip in the fourth to rally and force the extra five minutes
