Seto's fourth straight double-double leads Presidents past PAC co-leader Westminster, 55-48

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- A layup by Alie Seto (Allison, Pa./Brownsville) in the game's final minute broke a 48-48 tie and the Presidents knocked off first-place Westminster 55-48 at the Salvitti Family Gymnsaium on Wednesday night.

The Titans entered the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup 10-1 in league play, tied with Saint Vincent College atop the conference. The win moves W&J to 13-7, 8-4 in conference action.

Seto turned in one of her best performances of the season with 21 points, 17 rebounds and the game's final go-ahead bucket. The outing marked her fourth-straight double-double.

Much like the Presidents' and Titans' first meeting, the game was competitive throughout, as W&J held a one-point halftime advantage.

Seto and Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the President charge in the third quarter, combining for 17 of the Presidents' 19 points in the period.

After Gilbert converted a free throw early in the quarter, Seto reeled off the next six W&J points to put the Red and Black ahead 28-25. Following a game-tying Westminster three from Magen Polczynski with six minutes to play in the third, responded with a 7-2 spurt that was capped by a Gilbert three.

Gilbert connected on another three and Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa./Central) made two free throws to push W&J's lead to 40-33 with under a minute to play in the third. The Presidents carried a 40-35 advantage into the fourth.

W&J scored six of the fourth quarter's first eight points with free throws by Maria Lawhorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and Seto and a jumper from Maddie Gutierrez (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette), as the Presidents held a nine-point 46-37 lead with eight minutes to play.

Westminster clawed back with an 11-2 stretch that lasted nearly seven minutes as the Presidents shot one-of-10 from the field with five turnovers with a scoreless spell of over six minutes. By the end of the spurt, Westminster's Camden Hergenrother tied the game at 48 with 1:11 to play.

On the ensuing President possession, W&J turned to Seto, who delivered the go-ahead basket with 46 seconds to play. Westminster had an opportunity for a game-tying layup, but it rimmed out and Lawhorne collected the miss and was fouled. Lawhorne converted both free throws to put the Presidents ahead 52-48 and Gilbert made three more free throws as W&J iced the game.

The Presidents faced an early deficit as Westminster outscored W&J 12-2 of the first eight minutes of the contest. The Red and Black responded with six of the final eight points in the quarter, including a pair of layups by Seto.

The second quarter saw more of a defensive struggle as neither team scored in the first two minutes of the period. Two free throws from Seto were the only points in the quarter's first four-and-a-half minutes.

Piper Morningstar (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) had a layup and Lawhorne made three free throws to trim the Westminster advantage to 16-15 with 4:16 left in the half.

Johnston tied the game at 17 with a corner jump and put the Presidents ahead for the first time with a three in the same corner about 90 seconds later as W&J led 20-17 with 1:54 left.

A Westminster three-point play tied the game at 20 with 1:26 left in the first half, but Seto's free throw with just over a minute left gave W&J a 21-20 halftime lead. Seto and Lawhorne each made four trips to the free throw line in the second quarter, accounting for seven of the Presidents' 13 points in the frame.

W&J shot a season-worst 24.6 percent (14-of-57) from the field and was 3-of-15 (20 percent) from three. However, the Presidents held Westminster to an opponent season-low 27.3 percent (15-of-55) and 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from deep. The difference came at the foul line where W&J shot 24-of-28 (85.7 percent) while Westminster was 15-of-18 (83.3 percent)

The Presidents owned a 48-41 edge on the boards.

Seto got to the free throw line 10 times, converting nine attempts. She grabbed a season-high nine offensive rebounds as well.

Gilbert finished with 14 points while Lawhorne had seven points on seven free throws and 10 rebounds. Johnson chipped in seven points and three steals.

W&J takes its three-game win streak on the road Saturday at Thiel at 1:00 p.m.
