Yeshiva Surges to Victory Over Berkeley College

NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team earned a non-conference victory over Berkeley College, 75-63, at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Monday evening. The Maccabees bump their record to 6-12, while the Knights drop to 7-6.

Leading the way for the Maccabees was senior forward Tehilla Teigman, who produced a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Yuval Nitzan added 14 points, nine assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Senior guard Adina Rosenberg netted 11 points with four rebounds and a pair of assists.

After falling behind, 3-0, Yeshiva scored 12 unanswered points to take the lead for good. Nitzan began the rally with a 3-point basket and then Teigman capped it off with a layup. The Maccabees ended the quarter on a strong note, as Teigman took a feed from Nitzan and converted a layup, while being fouled with 45 ticks left. She added the free throw to complete the traditional three-point play and extend Yeshiva's lead to 24-14. That would be the score after 10 minutes of play.

The Maccabees' momentum carried into the second quarter, as Yeshiva scored the stanza's first 10 points to go up by 20. Sophomore forward Elizabeth Pavel began Yeshiva's blitz with a basket from inside the paint, and then Teigman converted on two layups to highlight the run. Later in the period, senior guard Chana Boltax drilled a 3-point shot to give Yeshiva its largest lead of the game, at 37-16, with 5:27 remaining in the half. However, the Knights rallied to pull to within 13, at 39-26, after 20 minutes of play.

Berkeley got off to a strong start in the third quarter, as a successful 3-point shot by sophomore guard Brittany Mitchell shrunk YU's lead to eight, at 44-36, with 7:00 remaining in the stanza. The Knights managed to pull to within seven, but Yeshiva countered with nine straight points, highlighted by two jumpers from Rosenberg, to take a commanding 57-41 hold with 1:51 to go in the period. Yeshiva took a 59-43 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Berkeley could not generate a consistent run to get back into the game during the final period as Yeshiva went on to earn the non-conference win by a score of 75-63.

For the Maccabees, junior forward Lindsay Brandwein had eight points, four steals, and three rebounds. Sophomore forward Mahlia Leventhal had eight boards. Boltax and sophomore forward Jennie Mellman each netted five points, with the latter clutching four caroms. Pavel added four points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard Nechama Braun had three rebounds and a pair of assists.

For Berkeley, freshman guard Jennifer Lightner scored a team-high 16 points and forced five steals. Mitchell had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with five steals. Junior forward Ebony Lofton chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Yeshiva will take on Skyline rival Mount Saint Mary College, at the Kaplan Center, on Wednesday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
