Big Second Quarter Propels Women’s Basketball to Victory

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College overcame a 13-point deficit in the second quarter to lead at the half and continue onto a 56-54 North Eastern Athletic Conference victory over SUNY Cobleskill.

Keuka College (8-8, 4-5) was led by Sydney Bloom (Penn Yan, N.Y. / Penn Yan Academy) with 13 points, tying her career-high. Meaghan McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) added 12 points and a team-best seven rebounds in the win.

Keuka College 56 vs. SUNY Cobleskill 54

The Fighting Tigers opened quickly against the Wolves as SUNY Cobleskill opened on a 7-0 run. A three by Kaitlin Snipas (Mountain Top, Pa. / Crestwood) cut the deficit in half, 9-6. However, the Fighting Tigers answered with seven straight to lead 16-6 after the first.

The Wolves battled to stay in the game in the second. Killian Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) and Amelia Poole (Bloomfield, N.Y. / Bloomfiled) hit back-to-back threes. On the following possession, Lexi Appleby (Weedsport, N.Y. / Weedsport) made a layup to cut it to 25-22. Two free throws by Poole cut the margin to one.

Brooke Overton (Brookline, Mass. / Brookline) helped spark the offense in the second half. The senior assisted on an opening basket by Meaghan McGwin and a three by Sydney Bloom. Bloom hit a second three on the next possession as the Wolves opened up a 38-29 lead. Keuka College would carry a 46-38 lead into the fourth.

Killian Mahoney hit a three for the Wolves to push the lead back to 10 points in the opening minutes, but the Fighting Tigers would narrow the margin late in the half. In a four-point game, Brooke Overton found Sydney Bloom rolling to the basket to push the lead back to six, 53-47. SUNY Cobleskill did not go away. A three-point play for the Fighting Tigers narrowed the lead to two, 53-51 with 31.4 left. Cobleskill fouled and Riley Record (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) hit both free throws. With six seconds left, SUNY Cobleskill hit a three to cut the lead to one. The Wolves went 1-2 from the line, but caused a Cobleskill turnover in the final seconds as the Wolves defeated the Fighting Tigers 56-54.

  • Keuka College remains a perfect 13-0 against SUNY Cobleskill on David M. Sweet Court. The Wolves are 19-6 all-time against the Fighting Tigers
  • Saturday marked the 250th North Eastern Athletic Conference game in program history. Keuka has gone 185-65 in those NEAC games for a .740 winning percentage
  • The 13-point comeback was the largest this season for the Wolves and tied for the sixth largest in the last 15 seasons
  • Brooke Overton had another strong game for the Green and Gold, finishing with four rebounds, three assists, and three steals

Up Next for Keuka College: Keuka College will continue their second lap of the NEAC North Division this week with a pair of road games. The Wolves will start the week on Wednesday playing at Cazenovia College. The week will then conclude next weekend with a road game at Wells College.
