Sewanee Women’s Basketball Tops Hendrix to Sweep Regular Season Series

CONWAY, Ark. - The Sewanee women's basketball team defeated the Warriors of Hendrix College, 65-53, on Sunday from Grove Gymnasium. With the win, the Tigers sweep the regular season series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Tigers saw themselves down early, but the visitors claimed the lead thanks to three shots from downtown in their first five attempts to lead 9-7 at the under-five mark in the opening stanza.

-Tied at 13, the Tigers pushed the lead to five, 18-13, thanks to a Lakeisha Phillips layup and a Kinsley Logan third 3-pointer of the quarter. Hendrix made it a one-possession affair after one period on a Caroline Wendt jumper.

-Sewanee started the second quarter on a 10-3 run to balloon the lead to 10 points, 28-18 at the 5:21 mark in the quarter.

-With less than three minutes left in the half, the Tigers finished the half on an 8-1 run to lead 38-25 at the break.

-In the first 20 minutes, Sewanee 56% (14-of-25) in the first half, 7-of-12 from downtown (58.3%).

-Hendrix came out strong in the third quarter with a 16-4 run in a six-minute span to cut a 13-point deficit to one point twice in the period. The second time saw a 42-41 lead for the Tigers with 3:56 left in the period.

-Sewanee once again responded by scoring eight straight points before Hendrix knocked down two free throws with over a minute left in the period, 50-43.

-Hendrix cut the deficit to six points, 54-48, with under eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, but a 9-3 run for Sewanee in almost a four-minute span to seal the win on the road.

-With the win on Sunday, the Tigers sweep the regular season series against the Warriors for the first time in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) era. Both Sewanee and Hendrix became charter members of the SAA since the 2012-13 season. The last time Sewanee swept two or more games over Hendrix in the regular season came in the 2004-05 season. 

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Ellie Treanton posted a 15-point, eight-rebound performance on Sunday. The sophomore drained a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.

-Kinsley Logan added 13 points and contributed four rebounds and assists each and three steals.

-Raquel Waller added eight points and three steals, while Ashley Stewart recorded four thefts.

HENDRIX KEY STATISTICS
-Anissa Gutierrez led the Warriors with 14 points, while Kessie Jenkins added 10.

Sewanee returns home for the final homestand of the 2020 season, which begins next Friday versus Millsaps at 6 p.m. from Juhan Gymnasium.
