Nor'easters rally for 58-50 win versus Gordon

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Abby Cavallaro scored all of her 17 points in the final 15 minutes as the University of New England overcame an 11-point deficit for a 58-50 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball victory over Gordon College on Wednesday evening (Jan. 22) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

An 11-2 start to the 3rd gave the Fighting Scots a 38-27 cushion at the 5:32 mark, but the Nor'easters tallied the final 13 of the frame to grab their first lead since 8-7 (40-38). Cavallaro accounted for eight of those, while the visitors missed their three field-goal tries and turned it over five times during the stretch.

Gordon steadied itself to establish a 48-44 edge with 4:49 remaining in the match, however a 10-0 spurt by UNE flipped the advantage for good. A trey from Cavallaro put the hosts over the top (49-48), and another pushed the gap to six with 1:38 on the clock.

Cavallaro led the Nor'easters (13-4, 7-1 CCC) in points while picking up five steals, and Jocelyn Chaput produced 15 points. Ashley Coneys went for 12 points, six boards, and three blocks in support; Faith Connors joined Coneys with a share of the team-high in rebounds.

UNE shot just 33 percent from the floor in the contest, but converted 13 offensive caroms into 19 second-chance points. After 11 turnovers prior to the midway break, the Nor'easters surrendered possession only three times the rest of the way.

Meghan Foley notched a game-best 19 points for the Scots (10-7, 5-3 CCC). Sarah Gibbs, Olivia Gagnon, and Madison Wynbeek all registered eight points; Gibbs also collected 14 rebounds.

Seven unanswered helped Gordon to a 13-10 lead through the 1st quarter. The spread increased to 25-16 in the 2nd, before UNE's Sadie Nelson posted seven in-a-row as the hosts closed to within 27-25 at the half.
