RPI Women Win 75-49 to Remain in First Place

TROY, N.Y. - Seniors Ines Ortea and Celia Tomlinson both scored 18 points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team to a 75-49 win over Bard College in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Arena. The Engineers improve to 11-4 overall and a league-best 7-1 in conference, while the Raptors fall to 5-10 and 0-8.

Tomlinson made 8 of 11 shots from the field and added a game-high 14 rebounds, along with three assists and two blocked shots. As a team, Rensselaer held a 54-24 advantage on the boards with 11 players registering at least two rebounds.

Ortea was successful on 8 of 17 shots while adding three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior Courtney Lewis also reached double figures in points with 13 on 5 of 8 shooting. RPI made 47.1 percent (33 of 70) of its shots with Bard connecting on 33.9 percent (19 of 56) on the other end. 

The Raptors were led by sophomore Christina Kiser, who scored 15 points with four rebounds and game-highs of six assists and four steals. Olivia Couture added 11 points.

With the score tied 8-8 five minutes into the first quarter, the Engineers went on a 9-1 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes for a 17-9 lead. Bard got to within six points on two occasions, but an and-1 from Tomlinson gave the home team a 22-13 lead heading into the second quarter. RPI outscored the Raptors by 11 points (21-10) in the second for a 42-23 lead at the break. Tomlinson had 15 first half points with seven rebounds and Ortea scored 10 points. 

Rensselaer extended its lead by 10 points in the third quarter for a 67-37 lead before Bard scored 12 of the 20 fourth quarter points.

The Raptors, who are in the midst of seven straight road games, plays at Skidmore College on Friday at 5:30pm. RPI plays Vassar College on the same day at the same time. Both games are Liberty League contests.
