ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore Camryn Scott set career highs with 16 points and 13 rebounds to help the St. Olaf College women's basketball team to a 65-50 victory at Macalester College on Saturday afternoon at Leonard Center.
Scott's 16-point, 13-rebound afternoon marked her third double-double of the season for St. Olaf (7-8, 4-6 MIAC), which held Macalester (1-14, 0-10 MIAC) to 25.4 percent shooting from the field in the win. The Oles led by as many as 20 late in the third quarter and held off the Scots in the fourth after the hosts got as close as seven.
First year Rachel Kelly reached double figures in scoring for the 10th time this season, scoring 12 of her 14 points in the opening half to help the Oles to a 36-21 halftime lead. St. Olaf held Macalester to a combined three made field goals in the second and third quarters.
Junior Keegan Mulvihill was a third Ole in double digits with 10 points to go with four rebounds and five assists. St. Olaf led for the final 28:19 of the game and used a 34-10 advantage in points in the paint to earn its fourth Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory of the season.
The Oles connected on three-straight shots early on to take a 7-2 lead and led 12-4 midway through the first quarter before the Scots closed the quarter on a 14-2 run to lead 18-14 after one.
St. Olaf broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring Macalester by a 22-5 margin to take a 36-21 lead at halftime. Kelly scored 10 of her 14 points in the second quarter and the Scots shot just 1-for-12 from the field over the 10 minutes.
Layups from Scott and Kelly accounted for the lone points in the first six-plus minutes of the third quarter, as the Oles held Macalester scoreless until a three-pointer by Solana Cushing with 3:39 remaining.
In the fourth, the hosts cut St. Olaf's lead to 10, 52-42, with a 9-4 start to the quarter, but senior Britta Koenen answered with a three-pointer to keep the lead in double figures. Macalester scored the next six points to close within seven, 55-48, with 3:43 remaining but did not score for the next three minutes, as the Oles held on for the victory.
St. Olaf plays its next three games at home, beginning with a 5:45 p.m. tip-off against Augsburg University on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at Skoglund Center.
