ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – History would not repeat itself Saturday evening in St. Joseph, instead new history was made as the Bethel University women's basketball team picked up its program-record 15th straight win in a 69-53 victory over Saint Benedict. It was the Bennies who snapped BU's previous longest winning streak of 14 games during the 1993-94 season.
Taite Anderson led all scorers with 20 points, finishing out her stat line with five rebounds and two blocks. Makenna Pearson added 16 points and five steals while Haylee Barker added 10 points and five assists.
A 3-pointer from Michaela Craigan before the buzzer gave the Royals a 21-16 lead after the opening 10 minutes. It was another dominating second quarter by the Royals defense that held the Bennies to one field goal and five points. Pearson caught fire offensively, knocking down a pair of threes and then beating the buzzer giving BU a 40-21 lead at the break.
The teams played and even third scoring 16 apiece while BU grew its lead to as many as 23. CSB outscored the Royals 16-13 in the fourth, but Bethel's defense kept them in the game forcing seven turnovers in the final 10 minutes to remain a perfect 10-0 in MIAC play.
Bethel shot 52.8 percent (28-of-53) from the field and were 4-of-9 from 3-point land. The Royals defense held the Bennies to 39.1 percent from the floor and forced 26 turnovers that turned into 24 points.
The three-game road trip continues on Wednesday at Carleton where Bethel takes on the Knights at 7 p.m.
