WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Makana Stone delivered 19 points and 10 rebounds, Kaylie McCracken 13 points and nine rebounds for a near double double of her own and the No. 12 Whitman College women's basketball team kept a perfect mark in the Northwest Conference with a 78-47 win over Lewis & Clark on Friday night at the Sherwood Center.
Mady Burdett suffered an early injury and returned for the second half to finish with five points. A handful of Blues (11-1, 3-0 NWC) picked up the slack including Shaira Young and Elena McHargue who played major minutes. McHargue delivered a career-high 10 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting (2-2 from three) with Young scoring nine points and recorded two steals and four rebounds.
Delsie Johnson dropped game highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Pioneers who fell to 1-10 and 0-3 in NWC play.
The opening quarter featured a tight affair which ended with a three-point Blues lead. The Pios were hot from the floor in the early going as Johnson opened the game with a hoop then nailed a three pointer to put her team up five points. Whitman responded with a pair of buckets from Kaelen Shamseldin and another from Burdett. The teams traded baskets before Jessica Cerne hit from distance inside of one minute to play to even the game. McCracken closed the quarter with an and-one three pointer to put the Blues up.
The Blues grabbed the momentum in second quarter. A jumper from Stone and a three pointer from Young helped Whitman open up a 21-13 lead with 7:36 to play until halftime. Hannah Martin's three ball halted the run as the Pios began to chip away at the lead. Over the next seven minutes, Lewis & Clark went on a 12-4 run capped by a layup from Gabby Beltran to send the game to halftime deadlocked at 25-25.
The third quarter saw sloppy play by both teams early but the return of Burdett to the floor gave the Blues an emotional spark. An early three pointer from Cerne tied up the score, but it was a 10-0 run from the Blues that gave them the edge heading into the fourth quarter. Burdett and McCracken both completed and-one three point plays down the stretch and the Blues entered the fourth up 13 points.
Whitman closed the door quickly in the fourth. Layups from both McHargue and Young extended the lead to 59-42 with just under eight minutes to play as Whitman won going away.
Whitman retakes the court on Saturday against Willamette. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
