Cortland Women Hold Off Buffalo State for 84-71 SUNYAC Win

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) scored a season-high 27 points, including 10-of-10 free throw shooting, and Beth Bonin (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) added 22 points as Cortland remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with an 84-71 win over visiting Buffalo State.

Cortland (9-1, 3-0 SUNYAC) built a 41-25 halftime lead and took a 59-48 advantage into the fourth quarter, but the Bengals (5-4, 1-1 SUNYAC) got back as close as four points twice in the final five minutes, the last at 66-62 on two Liv LeBaron free throws with 4:01 remaining.

Bonin made a free throw with 3:11 left and McGuire connected on a layup with 2:27 remaining to give Cortland 69-62 lead. Thirteen of Cortland's final 15 points came on the foul line in the final two minutes, including all 10 of McGuire's attempts.

McGuire finished 7-for-15 from the floor, 3-of-9 from 3-point range, and shared the team lead with four assists. Bonin made 3-of-6 attempts from the arc (6-for-15 overall) and added three assists and a Cortland career-best seven rebounds.

Joka Oyefeso (Staten Island/Port Richmond) recorded six rebounds and matched her career high with five blocked shots in just 13 minutes off the bench. Jess Womble (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills East) tied her career high with nine points. She was 7-for-8 from the foul line. Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) chipped in with nine points and six rebounds and Sarah Tully (East Aurora) grabbed six rebounds and distributed a career-high four assists.

LeBaron, who entered the game as the SUNYAC's leading scorer with 21.6 points per game, led the Bengals with 24 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Katie Villarini poured in 20 points and also grabbed seven rebounds and Kaelee Lynch tallied 15 points. Villarini and Lynch each hit three 3-pointers.

Cortland shot 42 percent overall and 39 percent (9-for-23) from 3-point land. The Red Dragons hit 25 of their 30 free throw attempts (83 percent). Buffalo State was 34 percent from the floor overall and 30 percent (8-for-27) from the arc. The Bengals went 15-for-19 (79 percent) from the charity stripe.

Cortland will host Fredonia Saturday at 2 p.m.
