4th-quarter rally nets UNE 59-55 win at RWU

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Abby Cavallaro notched 11 points in the final frame as the University of New England out-scored Roger Williams University by a 20-7 margin to post a 59-55 come-from-behind victory in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Tuesday evening (Jan. 7) at the Campus Rec Center.

The Nor'easters (10-3) are now the only unbeaten team remaining in the league standings at 4-0, heading into Thursday's visit to Curry College.

UNE trailed 48-39 entering the 4th period, but two freebies by Cavallaro had the visitors up (54-52) with 3:12 to go. Neither side could find the basket for almost two minutes, until Sophie Araneo hit a three-pointer to put the Hawks back on top. After empty possessions both ways, Cavallaro drew a foul and sank two more at the line to provide the Nor'easters with the lead for good (56-55) at the 37-second mark.

An RWU miss and another UNE free throw extended the cushion (57-55) with 19 ticks on the clock, and the hosts failed to convert two chances at a tie before Cavallaro put things out-of-reach with 1.7 showing.

Cavallaro registered 22 points, five rebounds, and four steals to lead the Nor'easters. Jocelyn Chaput tallied 12 points, six assists, five boards, and four steals in support, and, on a jumper midway through the 3rd quarter, the senior became the 25th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone (now at 1,007).

Kaylee Beyor picked up her first career double-double with 10 points, a game-high 11 rebounds, and three blocks. Ashley Coneys added eight points for UNE, which overcame 29 percent shooting (18-for-63) by edging Roger Williams by six (17-11) at the charity stripe.

For the Hawks (6-7, 2-2 CCC), Sam Leone totaled 25 points and six assists. Araneo went for seven points and six caroms, while reigning CCC Player of the Week Karli Opalka ended with just six points and nine rebounds.

UNE had leads of 5-2, 10-7, and 20-17 in the early-going, on either side of a 14-10 Roger Williams advantage through 10 minutes. The eighth tie of the contest came at halftime (26-26), and then Leone tossed in 17 of her points in the 3rd as the hosts constructed a cushion as large as 41-30.
