Drew women's basketball wins Lehman Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament

BRONX, N.Y. - Tournament MVP Erin Frederick posted 19 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals as the Drew University women's basketball team defeated Saint Joseph's-Long Island 77-55 in the championship game of the Lehman College Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament Sunday afternoon.

The win was never in doubt for the Rangers (8-2), who opened the game on a 21-3 run and led by at least 10 the rest of the way.

Frederick finished the tournament with 43 points and 20 rebounds. The junior center also notched a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds in the tournament opener versus Clark University. Her four steals in the championship game marked a career-high.

Drew captured its second tournament title of the season after winning its own Larry Horner C'40 Rose City Classic in November. The Rangers are now off to their best start through 10 games since the 2009-10 squad opened 9-1.

Junior guard Julia Ramos netted 11 points and a season-high seven assists for Drew to earn a spot on the all-tournament while sophomore forward Sekya Campbell added her first career double-double, posting 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Joey Meyers fell one board shy of a double-double of her own, contributing 17 points and a season-high nine rebounds. Freshman guard Katrina Wojtowicz scored a season-high 12 points in just 13 minutes off the bench, shooting 4-for-6 from 3-point range.

Drew out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 58-33 while posting the fourth-highest rebounding total in program history.

Megan Steinman led the SJC (2-8) with 18 points.

The Rangers' game-opening run was capped by a 15-0 spurt that gave them an 18-point lead with 3:54 left in the first quarter. Campbell scored six points during the decisive early surge while Meyers dropped in 10 and capped it with a conventional 3-point play. Drew led 21-9 at the end of the period.

The Golden Eagles twice pulled to within 10 in the second quarter, but a big 10-0 run midway through the stanza made it a 20-point game (37-17) with 4:05 on the first-half clock. Frederick and Ramos scored five points apiece during the outburst, and Drew led 44-27 heading into the locker room.

Some torrid outside shooting helped fuel a 12-3 run midway through the third quarter as the Rangers built an insurmountable 26-point advantage (60-34). Wojtowicz drilled back-to-back 3-pointers before sophomore guard Brooke Timinski connected from distance to make it a 60-34 game with 3:50 showing. Wojtowicz would connect on two more triples before the end of the quarter as Drew led 666-46 heading into the final stanza. The Rangers would lead by at least 17 the rest of the way.

Drew returns home on Thursday, when it hosts Saint Joseph's-Brooklyn at 2 p.m. in a non-conference match-up.
