Sewanee Women’s Basketball Holds Off Huntingdon in 2019 Finale

SEWANEE, Tenn. - In the final game of the second decade of the 21st century, the Sewanee women's basketball team took down the Hawks of Huntingdon College, 64-59, on Friday afternoon inside Juhan Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Trailing 9-7 with about five minutes left in the opening quarter, the Hawks went on a 9-0 run to reclaim the lead, 17-9, before Allison Hitchock ended the run with a triple from downtown.

-Sewanee scored two more field goals thanks to Eliie Treanton, but the hosts trailed 17-16 after the first quarter.

-Sewanee reclaimed the lead at the end of the first half thanks to two free throws by Treanton, as the Tigers took a 30-28 lead into the locker room.

-The home team extended the lead to 47-41 after 30 minutes of play, holding the Hawks to 27.3% (3-of-11) from the field and out-rebounding the Hawks, 9-2.

-Huntingdon made it a two-point affair with 6:51 left in regulation, 49-47 before the Tigers went on another rally to lead 54-49 with five minutes remaining.

-The Hawks stormed back to a 54-53 deficit with 2:45 left, but the Tigers held off the Hawks with a 10-6 run.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Ellie Treanton led the Tigers with 16 points and added six rebounds.

-Kinsley Logan posted 14 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Raquel Waller added 12 points.

-Abby Young nearly missed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.

HUNTINGDON KEY STATISTICS
-Shaonica Thomas dropped a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

-Ry Whetstone added 16 points in 20 minutes.

UP NEXT
The Tigers return to the hardwood on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, at Maryville, to begin a three-game road swing.
