WashU Collects 19th Straight Wydown Showdown

St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 10, 2019 –The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team extended their winning streak to four with a 94-67 win over Fontbonne University in the Wydown Showdown at Mabee Gymnasium on Tuesday. 

The Bears, collecting their 19thstraight win in the rivalry, are 6-2 on the season while the Griffins are 3-5. 

The WashU offense was led by freshman Molly Gannon's career-high matching 18 points on six three-pointers. Freshman Sammi Matoush collected her second-straight double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Samantha Weaver chipped in 13 points, six rebounds and six assists. 

Freshman Naomi Jackson tallied 11 points, with three three-pointers, while freshman Maya Arnott posted a career-high 11 points. Sophomore guard Isabelle Hren dished out seven assists, matching a career high.

The Bears battled to get their offensive game plan in action in the first quarter. Jackson hit two of her three three-pointers in the final 1:30 of the quarter, including one at the buzzer, to give WashU a 19-14 lead. 

WashU upped the tempo in the second quarter as Gannon heated up from beyond the arc, hitting three straight three-pointers to give the Bears a 30-18 lead at the 7:08 mark. The Griffins got within nine points at 42-33 with 1:45 to go in the half, but the Bears were able to use two trips to the charity stripe to take a 46-33 lead into the locker room. 

The Bears used a 12-2 run to push their lead to 23 at 58-35 on a Weaver layup at 4:15 in the third quarter and didn't look back the rest of the game. WashU held Fontbonne to only eight points in the quarter.  

WashU dished out a season-high 28 assists and matched a season-high seven blocks, three by senior Kristina Schmelter and two by Hren. The Bears also out rebounded the Griffins 49-27, the lowest total by an opponent this season. 

The Bears return to the WU Field House to host Westminster on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
