Yeshiva Cannot Overcome Slow Start Against Merchant Marine

NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team suffered a setback on Wednesday evening, falling to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Skyline play by a score of 74-55, at the ARC Arena. The Mariners advance to 4-2 (3-2 Skyline), while the Maccabees drop to 3-7 for the season (2-6 Skyline).

Merchant Marine never trailed at any point in the game, jumping out to a commanding 15-2 hold to begin the contest. After struggling during the first three quarters, Yeshiva improved in the fourth period by outscoring the opposition, 26-10, during the game's final 10 minutes.

The key for Yeshiva in that frame was scoring seven unanswered points in the late stages of regulation, to narrow the deficit to 72-55. Sophomore guard Jessie Orgel scored five of those points, including a layup while being fouled and hitting the free throw to complete the traditional three-point play.  It was not enough as the Mariners went on to earn the convincing Skyline victory.

For the Maccabees, freshman guard Yuval Nitzan (the reigning Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week) scored 18 points. Senior forward Tehilla Teigman produced her eighth double-double of the season, netting 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Orgel tallied 13 points, clutched four boards, and forced three steals.

First-year guard Elisheva Mirwis drained a 3-point field goal, while sophomore forward Jennie Mellman and junior guard Tova Mamann each netted two points. Senior forward Lindsay Brandwein and sophomore forward Mahlia Leventhal each brought down four caroms, while senior forward Chana Boltax and sophomore guard Nechama Braun each added two rebounds of their own.

For the Mariners, sophomore center Lauren Hunter scored a game-high 20 points and had nine boards. Senior guard Kayleigh Darcy managed a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while classmate Taylor Hightower produced nine points, brought down 11 rebounds, and had five steals.

It will be a quick turnaround as Yeshiva will travel to Long Island to take on Farmingdale State, on Thursday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
