ALMA, Mich. – Trailing by double digits on the road Saturday, the Albion College women's basketball team faced as much adversity as it has all season.

The Britons, however, had the appropriate response.

Amanda Larson scored 12 of her career-high 20 points in the second quarter as Albion rallied for a 65-62 victory over Alma College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action.

Larson grabbed 10 rebounds to complete her first double-double at the collegiate level. She was an efficient scorer, hitting 8-of-9 shots from the field and 3-of-4 from the line.

"It's probably the best I've seen from Amanda in a while," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said. "It was great to see her step up."

Albion trailed by 11 early in the second quarter, but Larson trimmed the deficit to 29-25 by scoring on three consecutive possessions.

Larson added a layup and Rebecca Ross scored from 3-point range as Albion gained a 30-29 lead.

Albion went on to hold a 39-32 lead at halftime.

Albion held its largest lead when Rain Hinton knocked down a jumper to make the score 53-39 with 4 ½ minutes left in the third quarter.

Albion shot 33 percent from the field as its offense struggled to score in the fourth quarter. Alma had a possession to tie the score at the end of regulation, but Madison Hill misfired from 3-point range.

Three-point shooting was a factor in the outcome. Alma knocked down 5-of-8 shots from 3-point range in the first quarter, but it made just two of those attempts the rest of the way.

"It's tough when teams are shooting like that," Carden said. "We had to weather the storm."

Elena Welker, Albion's first-year point guard, produced her third 20-point game of the season. She finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and two assists.

Albion, off to an 8-0 start for the first time since 2003, will concentrate on fall semester final examinations through Thursday. The Britons next game is a Dec. 14 date against the Hope College side ranked fifth in the latest D3hoops.com poll.
