UW-Whitewater Bests Illinois Wesleyan

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater topped Illinois Wesleyan 67-55 on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference affair at Kachel Gymnasium.

The Warhawks improve to 4-1, while the Titans drop to 4-1.

UW-W took control of the game early, scoring first and held the lead for the final eight minutes of the first quarter. Illinois Wesleyan was held to just nine points, its lowest scoring quarter of the game. The 17 points that the offense tallied came from six different players as the entire starting lineup scored along with freshman Abby Belschner(Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg), who accounted for four of those points.

In the second quarter, the Titans gained momentum, finding 11 points, including a seven-point run, in the last three minutes. But the Warhawks were able to counter with 3-pointers from juniors Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) and Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) in the final minute to increase their lead to 34-25 going into halftime.

Early in the third quarter, Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) and Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) recorded back-to-back layups that started a scoring spree, but the Titans answered back, scoring points of their own on every possession. About halfway through the quarter, Illinois Wesleyan found six unanswered points, decreasing UW-Whitewater's lead and coming as close as one point away from tying the game in the final minute.

The Titans tied the score at 52-52 within the first few minutes of the fourth. The last time that they led the game was in the very first minute of play. About halfway through the quarter, the Warhawks did not let up as they went on a 10-point run to end the game with a 67-55 win.

Belschner led the team in three categories, recording 13 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) tallied 12 points, four steals and eight assists, while Grundahl and Raeder registered 11 points apiece.

UW-Whitewater will be back in action on Tuesday to host Elmhurst (Ill.) at 7 p.m.
