Wenham, Mass. - Sophomore forward Katie Kirsch (Pelham, N.H.) had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 68-57 victory over the Gordon College Fighting Scots in game four of the Gordon Women's Basketball Classic this afternoon at the Bennett Center. The Bantams improve to 5-1 with their fifth win in a row, and will play their seventh game in 10 days on Monday at 7 p.m. against Sarah Lawrence College. The Fighting Scots fall to 3-2 with their second loss in two days.
Trinity sophomore center Elizabeth Althoff (So./Staten Island, N.Y.) also scored 18 points, while classmate Bailey Hyland (Broad Brook, Conn.) had 11 points, and senior tri-captain Peace Kabari (Manchester, N.H.) totaled 11 rebounds and nine points in the win. Gordon's Meghan Foley had a team-high 15 points and five assists, and Sarah Gibbs booked 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Trading buckets to start the game, Trinity went up 14-10 with 2:07 left in the opening quarter, but Foley drained a three-pointer before hitting a jumper to give the Fighting Scots the 15-14 lead heading into the second. Trinity wenr ahead, 34-29, with 25 seconds left in the first half on two Kabari free throws, but Foley cut the lead to two going into halftime with a three-pointer in the closing seconds.
The Bantams le by as many as six points in the third frame on a trey by rookie Frankie Silva (Auburndale, Mass.) with 2:16 on the clock, but Gibbs scored seven of the Scots' 14 points in the quarter including a layup that pulled the Fighting Scots to within a point at 47-46 at the final break. A 21-point fourth quarter gave Trinity the final edge. First-year Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.), Kabari, and Hyland scored three baskets in a row to turn a 49-48 lead into a 55-48 edge with 6:45 remaining, and the Bantams led by at least five points the rest of the way.
