Vinson Collects Double-Double as WPI Defeats Fitchburg State

WORCESTER --- Spencer Vinson (Los Angeles, CA) posted a double-double of 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds as WPI knocked off host Fitchburg State 62-41 in a non-conference women's basketball contest on Thursday evening.

The Engineers are 4-1 on the young season while the Falcons dip to 1-5 overall.

Vinson was 7-for-14 from the field while 10 of her boards were on the defensive side and five were off the offensive glass.  The senior was joined in double figures in scoring by Lisa Cristiano (Valhalla, NY) and Melanie Presseau (Manchester, NH), who registered 16 and 12 points respectively.  Bailey Savage (Charlton, MA) aided the effort by sharing for the game-high in assists with three and adding seven points while Maddie Blake (Bedford, NH) grabbed six boards.

Catherine Coppinger (Boston, MA) paced all scorers with 18 points for the Falcons.  Emma Thomson (York, ME) chipped in with eight points and Angelina Marzaai (Manchester, NH) and Payton Holmes (Carver, MA) scored six each.  Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, MA) contributed a team-high seven rebounds and doled out three assists.

WPI led 29-24 at the half and used a 15-4 run midway through the third quarter to transform a 31-26 advantage into a commanding 45-30 lead.   From that point on, the hosts would not get the deficit back to within single digits.

The 62 points by the Crimson and Gray were the most in games this season and the 41 points allowed on the defensive end is the third time they have equaled their lowest in five outings in 2019-20.  The Engineers enjoyed a large 45-29 edge in rebounding, only turned the ball over 11 times, and parlayed 14 Fitchburg State miscues into 17 points.

WPI plays the middle contest of a three-game road trip on Saturday at 3pm at Regis.   Fitchburg State is back in action the same day, hosting Albertus Magnus at noon.
