Gwynedd Mercy Women Fall To Arcadia In Route 309 Showdown

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy had a last-second three-pointer not fall as the Griffins were edged out by Arcadia as the teams met in the fifth-annual Battle of Route 309 Tuesday night at The Griffin Complex.

As a team, the Griffins connected on a program-record 18 three-pointers from a total of 10 different players. Jill Kane knocked down a team-high four that helped her score a personal-best 16 points. Her three with 22 seconds in the fourth made it a one-point contest, setting the stage for the dramatic finale.

Denise Sacco connected on three from downtown to finish with 11 points. Elise Sylvester added 10 points as she added a pair of treys.

Julia Makowski led all scorers with 25 points for Arcadia, hitting three triples and adding 12 rebounds and eight assists. Taylor Dunn kicked in 23 points and nine rebounds and teammate Holly Daveski contributed 22 points. The Knights were 26-of-32 at the free-throw line.

Threes from Sacco and Cayla Sharkey midway in the first was part of a 12-2 spurt giving Gwynedd a 14-6 lead and forcing an Arcadia timeout. Heading into the second quarter up 20-17, the Knights shot over 66% and drained three triples to help with a 12-4 run to close the half up eight at the break (48-40).

Makowski's triple to end the third quarter staked Arcadia to a 68-58 advantage.

In the fourth, Kane would net 11 of her 16 points and the team drained seven of their longballs in the frame. Back-to-back-to-back three-pointers from Marissa Sandone, Haley Crossley and Kane pulled Gwynedd to one. But the Knights swung the momentum back their way with their 7-0 spurt that held the Griffins scoreless for over two minutes. GMercyU whittled the deficit to one on four occasions in the fourth, with the last coming from Kane and her late three.

After a late bucket from Shannon Carroll to make it 89-88 Arcadia, the Knights went to the line and hit one of two attempts. The second rimmed out to Carroll where Gwynedd called their final timeout with 10 ticks left. A left corner three attempt did not go as the Knights secured the win and snap their two-game drought in the series which Gwynedd now leads, 3-2.

Sandone finished with eight points while Crossley had six. The two had seven boards apiece.

Gwynedd is back in action on Saturday when they take on Moravian starting a 1 p.m.
