Griffins Fall To Misericordia In Season Opener

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Misericordia downed Gwynedd Mercy, 107-86, in the season opener for the Griffins on Saturday at The Griffin Complex.

The scoring was spread out through 15 players on the day as Shannon Carroll was tops with 11. Elise Sylvester added nine while Denise Sacco, Tolu Omole, Emma Keal, and Kelly Owens all added eight apiece as the team set a single-game team record with 92 field goal attempts and 50 three-point attempts.

Tessa Zamolyi paced the Cougars with 24 points and 19 boards, both game highs. Teammates Jordan Barth and Gianna Delfino also added a double doubles as a total of six players finished in double figures.

After hitting four three-pointers in the first quarter to help build a 20-18 lead after the first 10 minutes, Gwynedd shot just 21% in the second and saw Misericordia take a late lead into the break, up 46-39.

In the third quarter, the Cougars stretched the lead to double digits courtesy of a 10-2 run to open up a 64-48 edge midway through the stanza. Zamolyi would hit a running jumper at the buzzer to give Misericordia a 77-57 advantage.

On the glass, Carroll and Chyanne Fine grabbed seven each while Jill Kane totaled a career-high five steals.

The team returns to action on Friday when they host Pitt-Bradford in the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Tournament starting at 6 p.m. followed by Ursinus and Scranton at 8 p.m. The winners meet on Saturday in the title game at 2 p.m. preceded by the consolation game at noon.
