WPI Gets Back in Win Column with Road Triumph at Coast Guard

New London, CT --- Bailey Savage (Charlton, MA) scored 15 points as WPI defeated Coast Guard, 67-44, in NEWMAC women's basketball action on Wednesday night in Rowland Hall.

The Engineers snap a six-game skid and improves to 8-11 on the season and 3-8 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 5-14 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

Savage shot 6-12 from the field and 3-6 from behind the arc. Alyssa Paul (Schaghticoke, NY) added 10 points in the victory and Spencer Vinson (Los Angeles, CA) scored nine points with a game-high nine rebounds.

Micaela Martinelli (Vero Beach, FL) led the Bears with a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds. She was 6-15 from the field and 2-4 from three point range. Annabella Farabaugh (Atlanta, GA) scored 11 points for the Bears and Kyra Hartman (Shillington, PA) added six rebounds.

Farabaugh and Martinelli combined for 10 of Coast Guard's 12 points in the opening quarter as the Bears led 12-11. WPI answered in the second quarter by outscoring the Bears 17-11 as held a 28 - 23 advantage heading into halftime.

WPI scored the opening nine points of the half as they extended their lead 37-23. Vinson and Savage combined for 11 points in the quarter as they outshot the Bears 25-16. Martinelli made a layup with 25 seconds remaining in the third quarter but Coast Guard trailed 53-39.

The Engineers put the game away as they outscored the Bears 14-5 taking the 67-44 final.

WPI shot 47.2% (25-53) from the field and 50.0% (11-22) from three point range. WPI held the advantage in rebounds, 42-26.

The Engineers open February with a 2pm road game at Babson on Saturday. The Bears are at Emerson at 1pm, also on Saturday.
