Brooks, Green Help Women's Basketball Pull Away from New Jersey City, 61-49

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Behind double-doubles from Brianna Brooks (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) and CeCe Green (Boonton, N.J./Boonton), the William Paterson women's basketball team (10-9, 6-6 NJAC) pulled away in the second half to upend New Jersey City (4-14, 1-11 NJAC), 61-49, Jan. 23.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Deadlocked at 13-13 after the first quarter, WP and NJCU traded buckets for most of the second period as neither side was able to gain separation. With the Gothic Knights holding a slim 21-19 edge, a layup by Brooks and a jumper by Carolyn Hill(Martinsburg, W.Va./Spring Mills) highlighted a 6-0 burst as the Pioneers led 25-24 at intermission.  
  • With the score tied 34-34 midway through the third, William Paterson scored seven straight points while holding New Jersey City scoreless over the final 5:05 to take a 43-34 lead heading into the final quarter. After Alisa Giordano's (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) three-pointer and Green's fastbreak layup extended the WP's lead to 14 (48-34, 8:19), NJCU used its own burst to make it a two possession game (53-49) with just over three minutes remaining. However, the Pioneers scored the game's final eight points to come away with the victory.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Brooks matched her career-high with 14 points while adding 10 rebounds to go along with five blocks and three steals. Green pulled down 10 boards and contributed a team-high 15 tallies for her second double-double in as many games.
  • Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) dished out four assists, giving the senior 326 for her career and moving her into 5th place on WP's all-time list.
  • WP utilized their size advantage throughout the contest, outrebounding the hosts 50-32 and doubling up NJCU in paint points, 36-18.
  • The Pioneers sweep the season series against the Gothic Knights for the fourth consecutive season, and have taken last nine against NJCU.
