The Oglethorpe women's basketball team led for most of the game Sunday afternoon en route to a 68-47 victory over the Hendrix Warriors in Conway, Arkansas. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 14-4 on the season overall and 5-2 in SAA play, maintaining a tie for second place in the league.

The teams went back and forth during the early part of the game with the Warriors taking their only lead, 5-4, with just under six minutes left in the quarter. From there, though, the Petrels went on a 14-2 run over the next 3:10 and pushed out to an 18-7 lead with 2:45 remaining in the first. They then closed the period on a 6-1 spurt to make it 24-11 headed to the second. Hendrix scored six straight points midway through the second quarter to cut the Petrel lead to seven with four minutes until halftime, but the visitors closed out the half with five straight and led 34-22 at the break.

Oglethorpe pushed it out to a 46-29 lead with 5:25 left in the third quarter, beginning the period on a 12-7 spurt. They then pushed their advantage out to 20 points, their largest of the game to that point, with 3:15 left in the third, 53-33. Hendrix used a 9-1 run to get back to within striking distance, though, and trailed just 58-45 at the end of the third. The Petrels put it away in the fourth, though, outscoring the home team 10-2 over the course of the final period.

The Petrels shot 41.3 percent from the field for the game and converted on 9 of 17 three-point attempts. They also connected on 87.5 percent of their free-throw attempts.

Senior forward Lauren Ransom led the squad on the day, scoring 14 points on a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe and grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Bailey Charles went 4-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 from long distance, scoring 11 points while grabbing five boards. Senior guard Brooke Simpson scored seven points, brought down five rebounds and recorded four steals.

"This was a great character win from our group after a tough day on Friday," said Oglethorpe head coach Alex Richey. "I'm super proud of them for coming together and playing well on the road. We have a lot of basketball left and I'm glad to see us take a step forward today."

The Petrels will return to Dorough Field House on Friday, when they're set to take on Rhodes at 6 p.m.
