THE BASICS:

- The Lead: A strong second quarter helped MIT pull away from Clark University and go on to record a 76-59 victory in NEWMAC women's basketball action on Saturday. Senior Taylor V'Dovec (Blaine, Wash.) tallied 16 points, helping her become the ninth player in program history to reach 1,000 points. She also hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with two blocks for the Engineers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Tied at seven with 3:45 left in the first quarter, MIT put together an 11-4 run during the next three minutes. The Cougars buried a three-pointer to make the score 18-14, but senior Sophie Gershon (New York, N.Y.) drained the second of two free throws to give the Engineers a small edge at the end of the quarter.

- Fueled by 13 unanswered points, MIT outscored Clark, 22-10 in the second stanza, en route to a 41-24 advantage at halftime.

- The Engineers continued to cruise in the third quarter as their lead grew to 29 (63-34) after a free throw by senior Maude Gull (Zurich, Switzerland) with 1:42 on the clock. Despite the deficit the Cougars continued to attack, outscoring MIT, 25-13, during the final 11 minutes of action.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Senior Kristen Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.) generated 16 points, three assists, and two steals while classmate Kara Holinski (Livonia, Mich.) posted 10 points, two blocks, and two steals.

- Sophomore Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) registered nine points, eight rebounds, and three assists as senior Dolly Yuan (San Jose, Calif.) grabbed a game-high four steals.

- First-year Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) led all players with six assists while Gershon totaled seven rebounds.

- MIT finished with advantages in rebounds (43-38), points off turnovers (16-14), second-chance points (12-10), and points in the paint (34-18). Clark, meanwhile, had the upper hand in bench scoring (49-21).

- This is the second time in program history members of the same graduating class have recorded 1,000 career points as Holinski reached this milestone at the end of last season. The duo of Vicky Best '99, MIT's all-time leading scorer, and Katie Spayde '99 were the first to accomplish this feat.
