Carnegie Mellon's Torrid 4th Quarter Pushes Tartans Past UR

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Visiting Carnegie Mellon University blistered the nets on 69% shooting in the fourth quarter to rally for a 66-59 women's basketball victory over the University of Rochester in the Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday evening.

CMU's fourth quarter outburst (25-15 on points) gave the Tartans their first conference win of the year. CMU hit 9 of 13 from the floor after struggling to a 12 of 37 performance over the first three periods. Carnegie Mellon is 10-5 overall, 1-3 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester lost its fourth straight game, all in the UAA. The Yellowjackets are 6-9 overall, 0-4 UAA.

Leah Weslock and Katie Higgins combined for 37 points for Carnegie Mellon. Weslock had 19 points, six rebounds, two assists, and four steals. Higgins had 12 points and two steals. Makayla Filiere was the third Tartan in double figures. She scored 14 points and made six steals. CMU recorded 19 steals leading to 28 points.

Julianna Okoniewski had 14 points and six rebounds for Rochester. Lena Ethington had 10 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Brenna James hit three three-point goals for UR to finish with nine points. The Yellowjackets grabbed 19 offensive rebounds leading to 19 second chance points.

UR built its largest lead, 23-14, early in the second quarter after a three-pointer by Lauren Foley. CMU went on a 14-2 run and led, 27-25, with just under four minutes left in the second period. Rochester held a 34-29 edge at halftime.

Rochester hit 22% from the field in the third quarter. CMU wasn't much sharper (30%), but the Tartans did get within 44-41 at the end of the third. CMU used a 14-3 run to open the fourth quarter and held a 55-47 edge with six minutes to play. Jamie Boeheim's layup pulled Rochester within two, 56-54, but Laurel Pereira made a layup and Weslock drained a three for a 61-54 lead and less than four minutes to go.

On Sunday, Rochester will host Case Western Reserve and CMU plays at Emory University in Atlanta. Case is the UAA co-leader at 4-0 with Washington-St. Louis. The Spartans have an eight-game winning streak after defeating Emory, 71-57, on Friday.
