THE BASICS:

- The Lead: A balanced scoring performance which featured three players in double digits helped the MIT women's basketball team defeat NEWMAC foe Wellesley College, 68-39, on Wednesday night. Senior Kara Holinski (Livonia, Mich.) powered the Engineers with 12 points, five assists, two blocks, and two steals while Caitlin Aguirre paced the Blue with 11 points, five rebounds, and two assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- A jumper by sophomore Jocelyn Luizzi (Colchester, Conn.) gave MIT a 14-2 lead with 3:59 left in the first quarter. Two minutes later, a layup by Valentina Morakis ended an almost five-minute scoring drought for Wellesley. However, the Engineers would go on to establish a 19-7 advantage at the end of the quarter.

- Three-pointers by Kendall You Mak brought the Blue within 11 on two occasions during the second quarter, the last time at 27-16 with 6:04 on the clock. A minute later, a jumper by senior Taylor V'Dovec (Blaine, Wash.) sparked an 11-2 run which resulted in a 38-18 lead at halftime.

- The second half was a balanced affair as MIT outscored Wellesley, 30-21.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Senior Dolly Yuan (San Jose, Calif.) posted 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists while V'Dovec finished with 10 points, five boards, and two steals. Coming off the bench, first-years Annika Sougstad (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) contributed nine and eight points, respectively. Luizzi grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to go along with two steals.

- You Mak registered eight points and two steals as Caitrin Spottiswoode generated seven points for the Blue.

- Both teams produced 18 points in the paint but the Engineers had the upper hand in points off turnovers (20-14), second-chance points (20-5), bench scoring (30-10), and rebounds (36-21). The hosts also recorded 33 points from behind the arc.

- Both teams continue NEWMAC play on Saturday, January 19 at 1:00 p.m. MIT will travel to Clark University while Wellesley will host WPI.
