Hendrix Fends Off Sewanee Women’s Basketball in SAA Home Opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. - A fourth quarter rally for Sewanee women's basketball came up short Friday night, as the Tigers were defeated by the Warriors of Hendrix College, 76-63, inside Juhan Gymnasium. This was the home opener in Southern Athletic Association play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The teams struggled on the floor during the opening quarter, with the first bucket of the game coming at the 6:32 mark on a Vinessa Daniel layup plus a free throw for the Warriors.

-Sewanee evened the score a little over a minute later on an Ellie Treanton triple.

-Near the end of the opening frame, after Sue Kim drained two shots from the charity stripe to give Sewanee an 11-10 lead with eight seconds left in the period. Vinessa Daniel ran up the floor for a fastbreak layup to give the Warriors a 12-11 lead after one quarter.

-With less than six minutes left in the half, tied at 21, the Warriors went on a 12-0 run in about a five-minute span to secure the lead for good. The Tigers went into the locker room trailing 37-23.

-The third quarter was much like the first quarter in terms of shooting. Both teams could not hit a rhythm, and the Warriors took a 49-32 lead into the final 10 minutes.

-In the fourth quarter, Sewanee used a 32-27 period to attempt to get back in the contest, but the Tigers, who got the deficit as low as nine points, suffered the setback.

-A new NCAA record was set on Friday night in the most personal fouls by both teams in a game. With 69 combined personal fouls, 39 by Sewanee and 30 by Hendrix, in the contest, that number passed the 68 combined fouls set back in 1997 against Wisconsin-Stout (37) and Buffalo State (N.Y.) (31). 

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Ellie Treanton led all Sewanee scorers with 13 points and added nine rebounds.

-Bella Taylor added 12 points, while Sue Kim posted 11 points, eight assists and four steals.

HENDRIX KEY STATISTICS
-Amber Turner recorded 10 points and five rebounds and dimes each.

-The SAA's leading scorer, Vinessa Daniel, was held to her average of 18 points in Friday's game. She added eight boards.

UP NEXT
The three-game homestand continues Sunday with a matchup with Rhodes. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
