HUNTINGDON, Pa. (Dec. 18) - Four players scored in double figures as the Saint Vincent College women's basketball rolled to an 83-45 road win over Juniata College in non-conference play.
Jenna Lafko, Kayla Slovenec and Madison Kollarscored 12 points apiece to lead a well rounded offensive attack for Saint Vincent, who picked up its fifth straight win and moved to 7-2 overall. The loss dropped the host Eagles to 3-6 overall in 2018-19.
Trailing by a 7-6 score midway through the first quarter, Saint Vincent used a 11-0 run to build a double digit lead over Juniata (17-7) with 2:38 left in the quarter. The Bearcats got baskets from five different players during the run, including a three-pointer by Taylor Boring to cap the surge. Kollar closed the first quarter scoring with a late layup to make the score 21-11 after 10 minutes.
After Juniata cut the deficit to eight points (23-15) early in the second quarter, Saint Vincent used another offensive onslaught to strengthen its lead. Bri Van Volkenburg ignited the run with a fastbreak layup, while Boring again capped the run with a made three-pointer to make the score 31-15 at the 7:40 mark. Late in the first half, Maria Morgan and Slovenec converted back-to-back baskets to push the lead to 20 points (39-19). Saint Vincent would eventually take a 41-27 lead into the halftime break.
The Bearcats would continue to control the game, extending its advantage to as many as 28 points in the third quarter. A layup by Erin Giancola beat the third quarter buzzer to make it 62-34 heading into the fourth.
Saint Vincent would extend its lead to as many as 40 points late in the fourth when Taylor Geerconverted back-to-back baskets in front of a layup by Maria Claybaugh. A total of 13 Bearcats recorded points in the win over the Eagles, as Boring was the fourth Saint Vincent player to finish in double figures, as she tallied 10 points.
Van Volkenburg pulled down a team-high six rebounds, while Paige Montrose and Stephanie Vaughnadded five each. Carlee Kilgus registered five assists while Lafko and Morgan added four each. Morgan and Van Volkenburg tallied three steals defensively.
Saint Vincent held several advantages over Juniata in the game: made field goals (37-19), points off of turnovers (33-9), forced turnovers (27-9), bench points (35-11) and assists (24-14).
The Bearcats return to Huntingdon this weekend to take part in the Juniata College Holiday Classic. Saint Vincent faces Rosemont College to open the two-day event on Friday, Dec. 21. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m.
