RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's women's basketball team never trailed Friday night, while leading by as many as 21 points, en route to a 56-48 victory against UW-Stevens Point. That snaps an 11-game losing streak against the Pointers, and is Ripon's first win against UW-Stevens Point since the 1995-96 season.
The Red Hawks (4-7) were dialed in from the outset, scoring the first basket of the game and getting out to an 8-2 lead thanks to six consecutive points by Maggie Oimoen to start the game. After UW-Stevens Point (3-4) cut that lead to one, Ripon scored the final 11 points of the quarter to take a 19-7 lead, which was part of a 20-0 run by the Red Hawks in which UW-Stevens Point went 12 and a half minutes without scoring. That helped Ripon take a 32-14 lead into halftime.
Ripon took their largest lead of 21 in the opening minutes of the third quarter on a jumper by Oimoen, before UW-Stevens Point got their offense in gear. The Pointers scored the final 12 points of the quarter, which saw them outscore Ripon 16-7 to cut the lead to nine entering the final period. That lead was extended to double digits in the fourth quarter, before UW-SP made one final run, cutting the lead to four with two and a half minutes remaining. Ripon would not allow the comeback to happen though, as they converted seven of their eight free throws in the final two minutes.
The Red Hawks shot 33 percent (20-60) in the game, including 41 percent (13-32) in the first half. Oimoen led the way with her 15th career double-double, recording game-highs of 24 points and a career-high 15 rebounds (five offensive). Natalie Geiger added 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while also making all seven of her free throws, and Jesi Nay chipped in with eight points and a career-high six rebounds.
UW-Stevens Point shot 30 percent (16-53) in the game, including 20 percent (5-20) in the first half. They were led by Amber Baehman's 13 points and eight rebounds, while Kellan Schmidt added nine points and four boards.
Ripon will be in action again on January 2 at 5:30 p.m., when they'll travel to Appleton, Wis. to take on conference foe Lawrence University. That game can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
