St. Olaf defeats Macalester in MIAC opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore Keegan Mulvihill and senior Makenna Ash recorded double-doubles and four Oles reached double figures, as the St. Olaf College women's basketball team downed Macalester College, 78-64, in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener Saturday afternoon at Leonard Center.

Junior Allyson Fuller sank five three-pointers in the first half of the game as St. Olaf (3-4, 1-0 MIAC) outscored Macalester (2-6, 0-1 MIAC), 44-28, and knocked down 7-of-12 from three-point range before the break. The Oles shot 45.7 percent from the floor in the first half compared to 34.5 percent from the Scots.

Mulvihill led the Oles by recording 17 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, three assists while shooting 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Ash recorded a double-double and led St. Olaf in rebounds with 16 along with 11 points. Fuller shot 5-of-8 from three-point range and posted a career-high 15 points. First year K'Lynn Lewis reached double figures with 11 points, three assists and two rebounds.

St. Olaf took an early 10-2 lead after Fuller sank her second three-pointer of the game and the Oles continued to extend the lead in the first quarter, as a three-pointer from first year Rose Bauernfeind made the score 17-6. The Scots answered with a 9-5 run to end the first quarter, making the score 22-15, as Katie Sowerby sank a three-pointer with 27 seconds remaining in the period.

St. Olaf scored on back-to-back possessions to start the second quarter after Fuller sank a three-pointer and junior Britta Koenenfinished a layup from first year Camryn Scott to give the Oles a 26-15 lead. St. Olaf went on a 9-0 run midway through the second quarter and extended the lead to as many as 18 points after a three-point play from Mulvihill with 3:23 remaining in the half.

In the third quarter, Macalester started the quarter on a 15-4 run and outscored the Oles, 20-11. Sowerby finished a three-point play and brought Macalester within five at 48-43, with 3:04 remaining in the quarter. The Oles shot 4-of-6 in the last two minutes on the period as they remained on top.

Back-to-back threes from Macalester brought the Scots within one with 8:46 remaining in the game, but the Oles answered with a three-pointer from Mulvihill making the score 58-54.

St. Olaf went on a 11-4 run and took a seven-point lead at 69-62 with 4:06 remaining in the game. The Scots kept St. Olaf's lead in single figures until a Lewis layup gave the Oles a 10-point lead with 2:22 remaining. Mulvihill accounted for the final four points of the game, as she shot 4-of-4 from the line in the last 1:05 of the contest.

The Oles registered 32 points in the paint and 30 fast-break points, compared to just 14 points in the paint and 16 fast-break points from Macalester.

St. Olaf is back to action Wednesday, Dec. 5 as they host crosstown rival Carleton College in a MIAC contest at 6 p.m. in Skoglund Center.
