SCRANTON, Pa. - Junior forward Makenzie Mason ( Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) led The University of Scranton women's basketball team in scoring on the day with 15 points, as the eighth-ranked Lady Royals coasted past visiting Goucher, 85-48, in the squad's Landmark Conference opener on Saturday inside the John Long Center.
With the win, the Lady Royals moved to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the Landmark Conference, while Goucher fell to 3-3 and 0-1 in the Landmark with the defeat.
In the victory, Scranton put Goucher away early.
To open the contest, the Lady Royals took a 14-0 lead in the first four and half minutes of regulation and never looked back, eventually opening up a 26-5 lead after the first quarter. Scranton went onto extend their lead out to 28 points (37-9) halfway through the second quarter, which was far too much of a deficit for the visiting Gophers to come back from the rest of the game.
Up 49-13 at halftime, the Lady Royals coasted over the final 20 minutes of regulation, as 11 of the 12 Scranton players who logged playing time in the contest were able to score points on the day.
Leading the Lady Royals in the scoring column was Mason, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds in just 20 minutes of playing time in the contest. For Mason, it marked the third time in six games she has led Scranton in scoring, as well.
Elsewhere, sophomore guard Ava Gammo (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) made the most of the first start of her career at Scranton by scoring a career-best 14 points after nailing four three pointers, going 4-for-4 from outside the arc in the win. Gammo also snatched five rebounds in the victory.
Meanwhile, junior guard Emily Sheehan (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) and sophomore forward Danielle McCurdy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) added 12 points, apiece, in the victory.
Sheehan dished out a game-high five assists (matching a career-high), while also pulling down four rebounds. McCurdy, who came off the bench in the game, posted a career-high in the scoring column with her 12-point day, while also posting four assists and four rebounds, as well.
Goucher was led in the defeat by guard Anise Williams, who scored 18 points, a game-high.
The University of Scranton women's basketball team will now be idle for the next nine days, as they return to action on Monday, Dec. 10 hosting York in a non-conference game at the Long Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
