Hartwick led 44-41 near the midway point of the third quarter after Taylor Kurs (Rego Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy) sank a pair from the free-throw line, but a 7-0 Pioneer run gave them the upper hand, 48-44, close to a minute later. The Hawks answered with five straight points and they grabbed three separate leads in the quarter before Smith dropped in a basket just before the buzzer to take a 55-54 lead heading into the final period.
Free throws from Kate McClellan tied the game and triggered the 10-0 Pioneer run in the fourth quarter. A free throw from Lauren Bondi would put Smith up for good, 60-59, with 6:40 remaining.
