Big First Half Sends No. 21 Warhawks to Victory

The No. 21 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team forced 28 turnovers and jumped out to a 22-point lead at halftime Saturday on its way to a 73-47 triumph against Dubuque (Iowa) on the second day of the UW-Stevens Point Tip-Off Classic in Stevens Point.
 
The Warhawks (2-1 overall) held the Spartans to 31.9 percent shooting, including a 27 percent clip in the first half, when they jumped out to a 12-3 advantage and didn't look back.
 
Sophomore guard Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) totaled 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead UW-Whitewater. Senior forward Sarah Schumacher(Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) collected 12 points, and junior guard Megan Corcoran (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) posted 11 points, four rebounds and three steals off the bench.
 
Junior guard Camri Conley (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) tallied nine points and three assists, and junior guard Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) finished with seven points, five rebounds and two assists.
 
The Warhawks led by as many as nine in the first quarter, took an eight-point lead into the second and increased their lead to 25 points by the 5:38 mark following a 17-0 run to start the period. Three different players hit 3-pointers during the stretch.
 
UW-Whitewater's lead stretched to 50-22 with 6:53 left in the third quarter before Dubuque (1-1) scored nine straight points to close within 19 with 1:53 remaining.
 
Corcoran gave the Warhawks a 26-point advantage four minutes into the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer, and the team led by as many as 29 points following a jumper by senior forward Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) with 4:07 on the clock.
 
UW-Whitewater continues non-conference play with its first true road game of the season Tuesday at No. 12 Illinois Wesleyan. Tipoff in Bloomington, Ill., is slated for 6 p.m.
