MAHWAH, N.J. – The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team found itself on the right side of a low-scoring affair Saturday afternoon as the Mountaineers defeated Medgar Evers College 44-33 at Bradley Center in the consolation game of Ramapo College's Roadrunner Tip-off Tournament.

SVC held the Cougars to single digits in each of the first two frames to bring a 22-7 lead into the break. MEC outscored the Mountaineers in both of the last two quarters, but it would only be by a minimal margin for Southern Vermont to hold on for the victory.

The Mountaineers (2-2) now prepare for the opening of New England Collegiate Conference play slated for Tuesday; SVC will host New England College for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Southern Vermont freshman Julia Ryan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) tied the team-high of eight points while adding six rebounds and three assists to her line. Classmate Julisa Vega (Watsonville, Calif.) had another eight points in just 11 minutes off the bench, and she grabbed six boards as well. Senior Maddy Main (Bennington, Vt.) chipped in with six points while notching a team-best 13 rebounds.

Main was selected to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 9.5 points and 13 rebounds over the weekend.

SVC ran out to an 8-0 lead with five of those points coming from junior Kyra Bruesewitz (Reno, Nev.). Medgar Evers cut its deficit in half by the 5:19 mark of the first quarter, but Southern Vermont kept the Cougars from scoring through the rest of the stanza while pushing its lead into double digits at the other end.

MEC would be held to just three points in the second period—the last of those coming with 6:06 on the clock. The Mountaineers scored six unanswered points in the final 2:02 of the half to go into the locker room on top by 15.

Ryan and Vega combined to score the first 10 SVC points of the third quarter before junior Sarah Poirier (Ferrisburgh, Vt.) dropped the final four. Medgar Evers was finally able to get its offense going and notched 15 points in the frame to go into the fourth down 36-22.

The Cougars posted five-straight points midway through the final stanza to get Southern Vermont's lead down to eight, but Bruesewitz ended the run with her first basket since the opening quarter. Scoring went back-and-forth the rest of the way for the Mountaineers to get back to .500 on the season.

Bruesewitz finished with seven points while Poirier ended with the four. Junior Di Smith (Troy, N.Y.) was strong on the boards for SVC—pulling down a season-high 10 rebounds with eight of those coming off the defensive glass.
