Hartford, Conn. - Junior Peace Kabari (Manchester, N.H.) had 14 points, six assists, and four steals to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 80-50 win over the visiting Mitchell College Mariners in the opening game of the Trinity College Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament this evening at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity will play Eastern Connecticut, which downed Roger Williams in the second game tonight, 58-45, tomorrow in the finals at 3 p.m. Mitchell and Roger Williams meet in the consolation game tomorrow at 1 p.m. Every team in action tonight was playing in its season opener, except Roger Williams which drops to 1-1.
Trinity led, 18-14, after one quarter but allowed just three points in the second while scoring 17 to increase its edge to 35-17 at the half. Kabari had 11 points and senior center Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) had eight in the first two quarters. The Bantams held the Mariners to 1-for-9 shooting from the field and forced 11 turnovers in the second stanza. The Trinity offense erupted for 30 points in the third frame, including six by first-year center Katie Kirsch (Pelham, N.H.), and led, 65-33. Mitchell won the fourth quarter against the Trinity reserves, 17-15, to account for the 80-50 final tally.
Erickson joined Kabari in double figures in scoring for Trinity with 10 points to go with seven rebounds, and junior center Emily Peters(North Attleboro, Mass.) added eight points and four rebounds off the Bantam bench. Rookie center Amina Wiley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) paced Mitchell with 11 points and seven boards, while junior guard Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, Conn.) contributed 10 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, and three steals for the Mariners. Trinity outrebounded Mitchell, 46-34, forced 25 turnovers, and held them to 32.1 percent field-goal shooting and just three three-poimters in 17 attempts.
